Popnoname en el Rioma

Cuenta la leyenda que cuando ves a Popnoname en vivo, las cosas no se limitan a tratar de seguir con la cabeza el ritmo de otro nerd de laptop. Lo suyo es más melódico que minimal, más melancólico que frío, pero no por ello menos bailable... Por algo ha logrado colarse a los sets de John Digweed o James Holden. Y este sábado 1 de septiembre por la noche, Jens-Uwe Beyer, el alemán detrás de Popnoname, hará hasta lo imposible en el Rioma por divertirte y ponerte a bailar, pero, sobre todo, por transmitirte su pasión por la música.

Después de aparecer en escena —quizá ajuareado con esa sudadera envidiable que luce en la foto... aunque creo que le robaron una hace poco— empezará a ejecutar su música, esa que se inspira en canciones melancólicas de rock para crear techno pop con ayuda de, sí, una laptop, pero también de una guitarra. Sonarán los temas de su álbum debut, White Album, que contiene magnífico techno pop con muchos coqueteos con ritmos incendiapistas. En su space puedes escuchar cuatro temas del disco: "Still", "No doubt", "Tremolo" y "Mother Earth".

Jens-Uwe nació en la isla de Fehmarn y hace poco más de un lustro vive en Colonia, donde comenzó componiendo música para teatro y cine, pero como estaba en una de las capitales mundiales de la electrónica, pronto se involucró en la producción de música para club. Desde hace un par de años es colaborador frecuente de la serie Pop Ambient, de Kompakt, la disquera de Michael Mayer. Su sonido ha sido siempre una especie de pop aderezado con trance, breakbeats, dub, ambient y acid house, y vocales que remiten lo mismo a Superpitcher que a New Order.

Sin llegar aún a los 30 años de edad, Popnoname ya cuenta con un currículum envidiable como productor de electrónica. Otras de sus creaciones han sido editadas por sellos discográficos especializados en electrónica de indiscutible calidad: Italic y Firm. Entre sus próximos proyectos se encuentra una colaboración con el dueto sueco Tennishero, uno de los nuevos héroes de la música escandinava contemporánea.

Jens-Uwe Beyer, quien firma sus mails como JU, me respondió un pequeño cuestionario a unas horas de su presentación en el Bar Américas de Guanatos. Por desgracia fue cuatro horas después del cierre de Tiempo Libre VIP, y ya no pudo ver la luz en papel periódico. Aquí van sus respuestas.

¿Cuándo y por qué decidiste crear Popnoname?
It was not a decision, it was a process. Three years ago I began to produce tracks for the public.
First I released a track on the Pop Ambient 2005, then the mini-lp "Piece" on Firm, and after some other ep's and maxis, now my debut "White Album" on Italic.

Last year I formed a Popnoname band, and there a lot of cooperations with other musicians, but in the first line Popnoname is a "me myself and I " thing.

¿Por qué decidiste llamarle Popnoname al proyecto?
Popnoname is not a project - it's a feeling, a view of life it's indifferent to what music I make: ambient, pop, techno, krautrock - everything is possible, I'm free of styles and descriptions what counts is the feeling... If you have the same feeling, and something to show, you could call it Popnoname, too - I don't have a problem with it. I would love it ;)

¿Cómo suele ser una presentación de Popnoname?

It depends on the venue and the people - but everytime, there is a big show! After a concert you know the Popnoname feeling... That's for sure. I'm lucky that I have the chance to show it - I feel alive on stage, so the people feel alive too. There is ecstatic atmosphere because it's hot and the people are dancing. Mostly I play on rave parties, in small clubs with a good sound. You will get lost in the music. And you can trust me, because I will give everything - everywhere...

¿Qué música sueles escuchar en casa?
Since the point I release my own stuff, I don't often listen to other music, not really, that's why I'm not a dj - but for sure other music plays a role... Can, My Bloody Valentine, Gas, Phillip Jeck... The Battles are great! I often listen to dj mixes if there is a Popnoname track in the playlist, I want to see how the dj mixed it - If it's cool I take it on my webpage.

¿Qué has escuchado del público mexicano?
My labelmate André Kraml was in Mexico before, and other friends: Matias Aguayo, Tobias Thomas - I have to greet all the boys and girls! They told me, I am a lucky guy to play in Mexico. It must be fantastic! For me , it's the first time and i'm very glad to come and play!
There are a lot of digital friendships to Mexico via e-mail and myspace, now i'm looking forward
to get to know some of them in real live... Very exciting! :)

¿Cuál va a ser tu playlist de tus presentaciones en México?
No answers, but for sure I will play a lot of the new tracks - We will see... :)

Según Popnoname, ¿cómo será el futuro del pop?
You have to come to my concert, people call it pop rave ;) Hope, you'll like it!

¿Qué te gusta más de lo que haces: producir o andar de gira?
Imagine I'm a farmer, now I'm on tour, now is harvest time!

¿Estás trabajando en tracks nuevos?
I will try some new tracks I've made... And then will come a new album next year - it flows!
In winter I release a new track on Pop Ambient 2008 on Kompakt.

¿Conoces algo de música electrónica hecha en México?
I don't know any mexican music, but i'm really looking forward to listen. Any tips?
